Introduction
At the end of November, JKS New Zealand embarked on an unforgettable trip to Tokyo, Japan, for intensive karate training and grading. From mastering Kihon and Kata to celebrating grading achievements, here’s a full recap of our experience.
Day 1: Training at JKS Headquarters
We kicked off with a fantastic session led by Hitoshi Kagawa Sensei, focusing on the fundamentals. This included:
- Kihon drills to refine basics
- A couple of Heian Kata to loosen up after the long flight
It was exactly what we needed to prepare for the days ahead.
Day 2: International Seminar at Teikyo University
Held at the Budo Gymnasium in Hachioji, the seminar began with Kihon and Kumite applications, guided by Shihan Kagawa. Later, we explored Shitei Kata, including:
- Jion
- Enpi
- Kanku-dai
- Bassai-dai
These sessions were supported by Toyama Sensei and Arimoto Sensei, ensuring deep technical insights.
Day 3: Kata Immersion
Morning sessions focused on the five Junro Kata with Sensei Kanayama, followed by advanced kata in the afternoon:
- Hangetsu
- Bassai-sho
- Jiin
- Wankan
Participants at 2nd Dan and under worked through Unsu, Gankaku, and Gojushiho-Dai.
